Sculpture of Christoffel ~ Broekhuizen

Along the river Maas

Picture of a Sculpture of Christoffel by Knippenberg at Broekhuizen, Limburg, Netherlands
This picture, along with the close up, and the wide shot of the remarkable sculpture of Christoffel is made by Knippenberg an artist from the village Swolgen. Swolgen is in the neighbourhood of Broekhuizen. The sculpture is based on the many legends around Christoffel, the bearer of Jesus Christ. The artist tries with this sculpture to breakthrough the traditional thinking about Christoffel. On his shoulder he carries an old wrecked little chair, which means that Christoffel is be ready to carry everyone. The Christoffel is be in a state of decomposition and the artist will say with it that the humanity because of mental pollution, caused the pollution of the environment and therefore has to be blamed for their own destruction. The enormously big feets have to do with the legend that says that Christoffel must be a giant. On the other side of the river you find the footprints of this big feets, so it looks like he was walking to the other side of the river! In Toledo they keep a substantial collarbone that might be was from Christoffel. (Toledo can be in Spain or Italy because we found a Toledo in Italy and also one in Spain).
